There are certain things a homeowner can tackle themselves and others they cannot. I know I can do my own oil change on a car. I can’t however, do any major repairs with the brakes or engine. With the HVAC, I can change air filter, clean the fan blades and even add more freon if needed. Anything bigger than that, I am stuck calling the professional. I would really like to expand my skills. I think especially in ductwork I can do some of the work. Every couple of years a homeowner should pay for ductwork cleaning. I have watched a duct cleaning appointment. It is not all that impressive. The HVAC contractor takes a large scrub brush and pushes it through the air vents. The HVAC professional just seems to guess where the brush should go and twirls it around. It is not very scientific or difficult looking. The only thing I would need is the actual scrubbing tool. I wonder if I can fashion my own or if there is a reason HVAC contractors all have the same brush. There must be an online store that sells HVAC equipment though. Getting the ductwork cleaning tool should be easy. Ductwork sealing would be a little more difficult. That tool looks like an airsoft gun. The gun has sealant particles in the air that it blows out. I wonder how much that tool is and how much it is to get it refilled. I like the idea of being able to do duct sealing anytime I want to. I would save so much money.
