Big Old Southern Homes and Their Inadequate Heating and Cooling Are Annoying

Many people dream of getting themselves a mansion. There’s something magical about the notion of strolling down a long staircase into an extensive foyer & greeting partygoers. Certainly, much of this ‘magic’ is not based on real life, a consequence of historical myths about powerful kings & queens throwing lavish parties. This sense of magic is also a consequence of contemporary inclinations — recognizably DIY culture showcased on cable programs about apartment makeovers, apartment “flipping” & perfect homes. Most of the homes showcased on these programs can be thought of as mansions and, depending on size & location, can cost millions. But mansions, especially old mansions, can be a heating and cooling money pit. Larger spaces are certainly difficult in this regard because heating & cooling depends to a great degree on the amount of space to be heated and cooled, insulation & air movement. It is undoubtedly difficult to maintain a certain temperature in spaces where air can easily move. This is the case with mansions because they are so big. In addition, it is undoubtedly difficult to cool or heat homes with two or even three or four stories, and mansions with central heating & cooling are often sporadically air-conditioned because of this; mansions usually have two or three floors; Centralized air-conditioning is not good at evenly cooling or warming–one floor tends to be overheated or seriously cold when the Heating & Air Conditioning system is running. Because the system is controlled centrally, it is almost impossible to adjust the temperature floor by floor. The results are uncomfortable hot & cold temperatures in vast parts of the mansion and/or burdensome costly utility bills from the ongoing usage of central temperature control. While recently built big homes have chop Heating & Air Conditioning systems, meaning that users can control the temperature floor by floor, these units are expensive, and old mansions, such as those we might see in the northeast, don’t usually have central heating & air of this kind. Trying to get a Heating & Air Conditioning system installed in structures where they are not meant to be is usually too costly, and must be installed by a certified Heating & Air Conditioning specialist.
