Don’t Add to Landfills by Leaving Your Old HVAC for the Garbage Man

As more & more residents replace their old, box air-conditioners with newer models, our dumpsters & landfills are being overloaded with old Heating & Air Conditioning systems.

These systems are made of harmful, corrosive, non-biodegradable stuff.

When they are dumped in landfills, they are out open in the elements plus other refuse, leaking chemical from Heating & Air Conditioning units into the air and soil. Over time & with changes in the seasons & temperature, these materials combine together, interact & seep into the ground & the surrounding locations. The impacts of this waste on soil, air, wildlife, water and, by extension, human health are not yet fully understood. However, given the undoubtedly alien nature of this waste to the ecosystem, it is not difficult to have a notion that the long-term impacts will be deep & unsafe. It is important for all of us to recycle our old Heating & Air Conditioning systems. Recycling doesn’t demand that the equipment be in good shape. Rather the recycling process for Heating & Air Conditioning units involves taken away and taken apart by professionals in electronic waste management. Reusable parts are rebuilt while anything too old or degraded for reuse is disposed of by companies who know how to deal with electronic waste. It is pressing to find ethical folks, however, since some companies simply ship the waste overseas where it destroys other peoples’ local environment & poisons the workers charged with disassembling the HVAC units. Finding responsible “e-stewards” to dispose of your old Heating & Air Conditioning system is therefore pretty important so that your old equipment doesn’t become someone’s backyard in China.
