Managing the temperature control in two households

My hubby plus I have two households that we move between.

The two of us have a household up north where we stay from May until November, plus a residence down south for the Winter time months.

Our goal is to avoid the most severe weather in each location. Keeping up with the demands of two homes is occasionally exhausting. There is constant repair at both locations. The two of us need to own two lawn mowers, two vacuum cleaners, two washing machines plus two of just about everything. The two of us also worry about whichever dwelling is left vacant. The frosty weather up north is quite brutal. The two of us experience temperatures down to negative twenty with a large accumulation of snow. The conditions cause all sorts of drawbacks, including water pipes freezing plus bursting. The two of us don’t want to spend money to heat an empty household to a comfortable temperature, so we actually turn the control equipment as low as possible. The two of us then stress over the chance of gas furnace malfunctions, and when we get home in the Spring, the two of us never really know what kind of problem we might have. This past year, I noticed that quite a few of the seams of the walls had popped. I suppose this is due to major changes in temperature plus the framework of the dwelling expanding plus contracting. The two of us have similar setbacks down south, except the concern is the heat plus humidity. The two of us are absolutely reluctant to run the air conditioning appliance when the dwelling is unoccupied, but the condensation plus moisture lead to mold plus mildew growth. Just recently, I invested in smart control equipment for both properties. The ability to access the temperature control equipment plus get alerts through my smartphone is wonderful.
