We purchased the house, finished the loan, and moved in.

When we were closing on our house loan a few years ago, my husband was pretty adamant about the fact that we shouldn’t add anything else onto the bottom line of the loan. He was really concerned about the fact that we were going to be spending so much money on a house in the first place and so when I told him that I thought that we should buy a home warranty, he really didn’t want to. I went over all of the different reasons that we should get a home warranty, because I had grown up in a family where we had always had one on our home. We moved a lot when I was growing up and I remember my dad always saying that if you could buy a home warranty to go along with your loan, you should always do it for the heating and cooling system coverage if nothing else. I always remembered that as I was growing up and I tried to talk my husband into it. However, he was so freaked out about the bottom line on the money that we were spending on the house that there was just no way that I could get him to do it. We purchased the house, finished the loan, and moved in. For a while, everything was fine. We had a really great high efficiency heating and cooling system that was installed in the house when we moved in and it worked great for about a year. Then everything started to go downhill and my husband really started to wish that he had not declined the home warranty. It would have covered all of our HVAC repairs!

Sometimes you can find really weird things in the ductwork when you’re working on cleaning out ventilation systems.

I know that this sounds like a really weird topic of conversation, but when you have been working in the HVAC industry for as long as I have been, you definitely know that you have seen some crazy stuff here and there. It’s just something that you have to deal with whenever you are in a service industry like the heating and cooling profession. You have to deal with a lot of people, and as you know, sometimes people can be weird! Over the years, I have found all kinds of things in the ductwork of my clients’ homes. I have found the ashes of deceased pets, I have found wigs and weird costumes, I have found the bones of dead raccoons, and once I even found a gold bar. I have found jewelry and cash in the air ducts before, and I guess a lot of people just think that the ventilation ducts are great hiding spots to keep valuables from robbers. I don’t know why people think this, since A lot of times it seems like they forget that this stuff is there themselves. When I found the gold bar, I could have kept it if I had not been such an honest person! I gave it to the old lady whose house I was in and she told me that she had completely forgotten that she had hidden it up there a few years before I found it up there!

I’m beginning to wonder if we are overusing our A/C system this summer.

I know that sounds silly, because most people think that you can’t overuse your air conditioning system.

But we live down in the southern part of the country where the temperatures are burning hot in the summer. And even worse, we are having a really big heat wave this year! So it’s even hotter than it normally is. I think last week, the temperatures were up in the 90s most days and one day it was even 100 degrees. Needless to say, if you don’t have a really great air conditioning system then you are definitely going to be in big trouble if you live around here. I have a great central air conditioning system installed in my house. We got it late last summer when it was on sale at our local HVAC company. However, I don’t really know that it was meant to be run at this level for such a long period of time. I feel like most air conditioning systems are made to run intermittently, but at this point in the year, mine is running almost constantly. I think having an A/C running constantly might be a problem, and this might be especially true when it’s a residential system like the one I have in my home. Of course, maybe it would be different if it were a commercial HVAC system in a restaurant or a movie theater or something like that, but it’s the small one in my own basement!

No one, including me, thinks about their furnace system during the warm spring and summer months.

I know that this is true for everyone that I know, at least.

I have never known of any one of my family and friends who even checks in on their heating system during the warmer months of the year. It only makes sense that this is something that happens because no one is really worried about how their old oil furnace or electric furnace is doing down there in their basement when they are out enjoying the pool or the beach during the warm summer weather. Of course, all of us are more concerned about our central air conditioning systems when the weather is hot outside, and that only makes sense. However, I think that we should all start viewing our heating and cooling systems as things that we should focus on and take care of year round instead of just seasonally. It’s true that we may only use our heating systems in the winter and our cooling systems during the summer, but the fact remains that we need to be sure that each one of these important aspects of our home’s indoor air quality is kept up to speed even when they aren’t currently being used. Last year, I forgot to check on my furnace over the summer and by the time I needed to use it in the fall when the weather started cooling off, the whole furnace was covered in dust and cobwebs! I’m determined not to make that mistake again this year.

I hold a summer long training camp for different sports.

Each week features a different sport.

I have instructors from all around the world come in and cooks that stay on staff to make the three meals. It is a really profitable organization and it is great for the kids learning wise. The one year I was in a huge bind right before summer. I was experiencing trouble with the bathrooms in my facility. The camp bathrooms were fine. The issue was the pool and dining area bathrooms and showers weren’t working. I was scrambling for a quick solution. I had swimmers coming in week one and tons of soccer players the following week. I needed both the showers and the bathrooms up and running. I found a company that specializes in turnkey solutions. They offer portable bathrooms and mobile showers. I went for it and it saved my life. I got a whole stretch of bathrooms and showers added to the dining area and the pool house. The only difference that year was the computers had to walk outside first to use the bathroom. The bathrooms inside looked very classy. There were even air dryers for their hands. The showers were private stalls and a combination of open heads. It really looked pretty similar. The cost of the mobile restroom solution wasn’t too bad either. I honestly would have paid anything to keep my camp running though. I didn’t have to delay even a week because that portable facility company got everything made and shipped to me immediately.

My brother is one of the best handypersons I know.

He has replaced roofs, installed flooring and walls.

He is a jack of all trades when it comes to any kind of home repairs and remodelling. When I wanted to have sun control window film installed in our house, my brother volunteered to help my husband install it. He said he had done window film installation several times over the years, and once you got the hang of it, it was simple. I wasn’t so sure about his idea of simplicity, but I agreed with him. I knew how horrible my husband was when it came to home repairs. It took him twice as long to do a job badly than it takes someone else to do it well. When my brother showed up, he looked at the window film and then took a glance at the instruction. He pulled his tools from his truck and headed back into the house. I thought he was going to put the window film on the outside of the window, but I thought wrong. He proceeded to install the window film on the inside. He said that it would last longer if it was on the inside of the window. I wanted to know what kind of maintenance I should do? He told me that if it became dull, I could polish it with a bit of silicone polish. Other than that, a bit of damp cloth wiping every once in a while was all the maintenance it needed. He did an excellent job installing the window film. I know that if my husband had attempted the job, it would still be in the pantry, and it was installed a year ago.
