A convection furnace is a type of furnace that uses convection to move heat through the movement of gas or liquid. A convection furnace works similarly to a convection oven and is very different from conduction or radiant heating since it relies on air movement. It functions by warming your room from the top down. A convection furnace basically depends on the air properties to rise when hot and fall when cool. Unlike radiant furnaces that utilize electromagnetic waves to push heat, convection furnaces use the air itself. The process basically involves convection currents moving throughout the body of the furnace and across the heating element. The heat created is transmitted to the surrounding air, causing the heated air to expand and rise. Naturally, hot air has a lower density compared to cool air. This is among the most essential concepts in convection heating… While heated air rises and displaces your room temperature air, the cooler air comes into contact with your convection heater. As a result, it gets heated up as well. The process then repeats itself, hot air rises, your room temperature air gets displaced close to your heater. This process repeatedly happens until you eventually turn off your convection heater, either through an automatic shut off if your gas furnace has that feature. Automatic convection furnaces turn off once the desired room temperature has been reached. Also, some convection furnaces are designed with a fan to speed up drawing in cool air and distributing heated air. Convection furnaces are the most effective types of furnaces for whole-household heating.
