Wouldn’t trade life in the south for a thing

My friends call me from time to time to check in and catch up; it’s the only way we can keep in touch since I’m not in driving range anymore. Three years ago, I packed up my things and made the very long trip from New England to the southern end of the East coast. I’m looking at the same ocean, but it’s about fifty degrees warmer and I can go swimming if I want to.

I no longer have to worry about shoveling snow, breaking ice, or having to call out of work because I won’t be shovelled out in time to make it in for my shift. I’m not losing money from being unable to get into work, and I’m also not paying out the nose for heating my house. Sure, I trade it for running the AC system nearly year round, but let me tell you the cost isn’t even remotely the same. A lot of houses like mine, run off of oil heating in the north. Oil is the absolute worst money sucker. Oil heaters aren’t that bad, but budgeting the cost of the fuel is all but impossible.

Since the price is always changing on the market, you can’t even budget it out. The price I paid in October could go up by over a hundred dollars by the time I need more in December. The AC is constant; the price of a kilowatt isn’t changing. Plus, its not a finite fuel, so I’m not stressing about running out. I will take a dozen heat waves over just one blizzard.

Dehumidifier keeps my collection safe

I’m not much for collecting things, but after I finished my literature degree I got big into collecting old books. There are few things I love more than vintage literature, especially the illustrated editions of my favorite poets from the turn of the century. However, I also live in an apartment in the south. This means that my home is hardly the safest for collecting old books.

If you’ve ever been in a library, you may notice the archives is seperate from the general collection. This is to keep them safe, not just from people but the elements. The older the book, the more it needs cool and dry air to keep it in the best condition possible. So, since I do not have a sealed and temperature controlled room, I did the next best thing by keeping my books in the spare bedroom with a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier does what my air conditioner cannot–it physically alters the moisture of the air. Sure the AC makes it feel cooler and dryer, but it doesn’t actively remove the moisture.

I can always see the dehumidifier working too, as I can see the water it pulls form the air in the collection tank. All I have to do is empty the little water tank once its full, which happens a lot in the summer, and its good to go. I can run it constantly, and it’s so minimal it doesn’t run up the utility bill. With the dehumidifier, my old book collection is safe from the ravages of the environment.

Air purifier keeps allergies at bay

I’m so grateful to live in a household where people are so kind and understanding. Currently I share a rental home with two other roommates. The house itself is a nice duplex, with a really great furnace and even decent AC units throughout the home. However, since we don’t have central AC, we can’t get a household method of relieving the things that set my allergies off. We have one cat and one dog, and while I love them both they also make my allergies get really, really bad.

I purchased a small air purification system for my bedroom, which at least helps my sleep at night. If I stay in my room while my symptoms are pretty bad, I can usually find relief without having to take the meds that make me feel drowsy and gross. The downside is then I can’t see my roommates as much. Well, they were nice enough to use a but of their holiday bonuses to buy another air purification system for the kitchen and living room of the house.

This air purifier is a whole lot bigger than mine, and a great deal more powerful. It even has three levels of air cleaning, whereas mine only has two. The downstairs air purifier has the dual layer HEPA and charcoal air filter system that mine does, which allows it to remove pet dander and even mold spores. It also has a UVC light that kills bacteria in the air when its on, which is awesome when someone in the house gets sick. With the new air purifier, I’m breathing better than ever.

Keeping the cold out and the heat in

Maintaining a warm house is not just about having a great HVAC system. Sure, having an efficient heating and air conditioning unit with clean and tear-free ductwork helps, that much is obvious. But if your home isn’t able to work with the system correctly, it’s not

going to actually help to keep you warm or save your money.

What everyone should do is work to sync the house to your HVAC system. This is just another way of saving is your home should be gone through top to bottom to identify any drafts and deal with them ASAP. The longer you wait to seal up your house, the worse off you’ll be. It’s an easy thing to put off, especially if you don’t immediately know the source of the draft, but every month you don’t do it is just another month your utility bill will continue to soar. The first thing to check out is the windows and doors. Here you may need to replace gaskets, or even install more insulation.

Today they make a nice can of foam insulation with a nozzle nearly as thing as a needle. This allows you to inject insulation in the smallest of cracks and crevices, sealing it off from the unwanted air outside. Windows and doors may need new gaskets and weather stripping, or you may need new weather stripping altogether. Walls may need more insulation, even floors in some houses can be a problem. Once you’ve finished all of this, you’ll still need to check the attic. Here not only does the attic need to be insulated, but your HVAC duct does too. Ductwork should always be wrapped in the correct level of insulation in order to keep air from escaping before it gets into your home.

I spent so much money

I have been battling mold in my bedroom since I moved into this apartment. At one point I thought I had it finally all gone, only to realize I had a ton of it growing under my own bed, all on the underside of my wooden bed frame. When I did some more digging, I realized the mold would keep coming back unless I made some serious changed. So after taking everything outside to be cleaned with mold killer outside, where the mold spores couldn’t spread and attach to something else in my bedroom again, I went out and made a trip to the home improvement store. There I found the best tools to help me make my apartment inhospitable to the mold: a dehumidifier and an air purifier. The dehumidifier is step one: making the room inhospitable to future mold growth. By getting excess moisture out of the air, the place will be too dry for mold to be able to make a home of my apartment again. Then the air purifier does the all important step of removing any lingering mold spores from the air. However, not all air purification systems are able to pull this off. Only one type of air filter can work to remove mold from your home, and that is a HEPA air filter. The HEPA air filters are the only ones currently available which are well made enough to capture mold spores, which are actually so small they cannot even be seen by the naked eye. Now I can rest easy knowing the mold is finally gone for good.

I am on the trail

I loathe having to have oil where I live, however out here there are few options. Plus, gutting the house to put in a totally bizarre style of heating would cost a lot more than just replacing the oil boiler. So when our Heating in addition to A/C repair guy told us that it was time to beginning shopping around, both of us asked him what are best possibilities were. He told us that if both of us planned on sticking with the oil, both of us should look into getting a condenser boiler, but unlike other types of boilers, this unique  kind features additional components that go to job help us conserve fuel, which in turn saves us money. The condenser boiler has a heat reusey aspect that works to actively reuse tepid air that would otherwise be lost in process of heating the water in addition to thusly warming up our house. In doing so, the condenser boiler is able to put over 90% of the heat that it creates back into our house, which is hugely productive number. This is especially a step above other types of house furnaces, such as forced air heating in addition to other models of furnaces, but ever since we’ve purchased the condenser boiler, both of us have saved money on our house heating bill. Then since the condenser boiler also is the machine which heats the tepid water for our home, both of us save money on our utilities not just in the Wintertime time, however all year round! The condenser boiler was not cheap by any means, although I have no doubt it will pay for itself in savings over time.
