I live in an area with especially extreme weather conditions.
The winters are well-known for record-breaking cold temperatures well below zero. We can accumulate multiple feet of snow in a matter of hours, and the wind chill can be dangerous. Along with heavy rains, violent winds and hail, the summers can bring temperatures in the mid nineties with high humidity. We switch between running the furnace and relying on the air conditioner just about year round. The cost of heating and cooling adds up to about fifty percent of the household energy bills. I am always looking for opportunities to reduce energy waste. My HVAC contractor suggested a smart thermostat. He also recommended adding a whole-home humidifier for greater comfort and less demands on the furnace over the winter. As I researched different options, I came across automation systems that incorporate control over temperature and air quality accessories into a single hub. Plus, the automation system allows me to connect smart appliances, such as the refrigerator, washer, dryer, oven and microwave. This wireless technology makes it possible to turn lights on and off, unlock and lock doors and even adjust the temperature setting of the water heater. As I invest into new electronics and appliances, I can easily incorporate them into the system. The ability to program household functions according to my family’s schedule maximizes efficiency. It’s easy to make sure that the furnace isn’t blasting and heating an empty house. I have the lights set up to automatically turn off to conserve energy. While the home automation system was a considerable investment, the savings on monthly utility bills is helping to recover the expense.
