My Aunt Cathleen has been having a terrible time with her heating and air conditioning system lately. She lives in a pretty big house out in the country. It’s not really an old house, and so her gas furnace and her air conditioning system aren’t really that old. They really shouldn’t be giving her much of a problem but lately she’s been living a real HVAC nightmare. It seems like her heating and her air conditioning are just switching places or something. She says that when she adjusts her thermostat in the morning, the exact opposite of what she thinks is going to happen is actually what ends up happening. So if the temperature is too warm outside, she’ll turn the A/C on in the house. But she says that the air that comes out of the air vents feels like it’s from the heating system instead of from the air conditioning! And then the opposite is also true for Cathleen’s HVAC system. If the weather is cold outside and the temperature is getting too chilly, she will go to the thermostat and turn on the heating system. Well, she expects the oil furnace to kick in and heat up her house, of course. But she says that what happens with the heating is that the air that comes out of the ventilation system feels just like cooling air from the A/C! Poor Cathleen. She’s very confused about the whole thing and doesn’t understand what in the world would make her HVAC system behave this way! I told her she might as well just go ahead and call the heating and air conditioning company because this isn’t something that’s just going to fix itself!
