Heated shelter for stray cats

When I was growing up, we had a pretty unusual thing that happened at our house very often. We regularly had animals show up on our doorstep. Literally. My mom always joked that we you must have some kind of vacancy sign outside, which drew all of these stray and injured animals directly to our residence. As such, we wound up being the “zoo house” of the neighborhood. The problem was, for every cat or dog that we brought into our house, there were another three that we couldn’t fit into the residence. We did our best to find homes for these animals, but often times we saw strays running around who weren’t going to be easily adopted. That’s what I came up with the idea of transforming our small, decrepit shed into a heated shelter for the local stray animals. I figured, even if the animals were scared and didn’t want to trust us enough to come inside our house, we could provide heat and shelter for them outside. We got to work with the small shed, first plugging up all of the drafty holes in the sides of the building. We put new insulation into the roof and tried to seal all of the problem areas around the structure. Then, I began searching for heating solutions at local thrift stores. I knew we would need safe heating that couldn’t be knocked over or accidentally caught on fire, so eventually we were able to find ourselves in affordable used mini split ductless heating and cooling system. The heater safely stayed on the wall, out of danger’s way, and the shed was toasty warm every single day. I know we saved a lot of animals with our heated shed.
