Don’t buy an HVAC system second-hand

I took a big gamble when purchasing my first home a couple years ago.

I was so happy that I was able to afford this little home in a relatively quiet neighborhood just outside of town.

There were a few things that needed to be renovated though. One of them was the HVAC system, but there was no system in this home. The former tenant had gotten by with window cooling systems, and no heat, but I suspect they had space heaters in the winter. However, I wasn’t interested in getting by on such temperature control implements. I knew I wanted a central heating and cooling unit, although I didn’t realize I was in a position to buy a brand new one for this house. That’s when I decided to get an HVAC system second-hand. I thought it was luck when I came across a system on a social media website marketplace. The price seemed too wonderful to be true, but I was willing to take a chance. Well, long story short, it was tough to even convince a local contractor to install it for me, because they warned me that second hand systems could have a host of problems with them, and may not even be properly sized for your home. I was stubborn, though, and I insisted that I would spend my money to install it. The thing barely works! Now I have to spend more for the same people to remove it, and buy one of their models. It’s going to be a while before I have the money for that!
