The HEPA air filters are the only ones currently available which are well made enough to capture mold spores, which are actually so small they cannot even be seen by the naked eye. Now I can rest straight-forward knowing the mold is finally gone for good.

Living in humid climates puts you at a disadvantage with humidity control
I grew up living in a mountainous region and didn’t travel anywhere outside of my home state until I was 10 years old. I was used to four distinct seasons year-round and mostly mild and dry air on a day to day basis. I took for granted the beautiful backdrop that the white peaks would make miles off in the distant horizon, coloring a landscape right out of a Bob Ross painting. When it came time to apply to college in my late teen years, I sent applications out to school all over the country. After some deliberation following my application responses, I ended up in a small liberal arts college in the deep south. Saying that I had an adjustment to get through is an understatement, and I can vividly remember the thought going through my mind after spending an entire week down here in the summer for the very first time. I thought I was going to pass out from heat exhaustion just from walking to my car in a large shopping mall parking lot. It didn’t take long for me to notice the massive humidity increase either. There are many days in the mountains where it isn’t crazy to expect humidity levels below 45%. In contrast, I can’t remember the last time the humidity dipped below 80% where I live now, and it was utterly miserable the first year experiencing these redundant climate conditions from January through December. After I started to develop sinus issues, I went out and bought a dehumidifier to supplement my home air conditioner. Although the HVAC system in my house pulls moisture out of the air as it’s chilled, the air conditioner can only dehumidify the house to a certain degree. I set up a dehumidifier that cost only $200 and pulls out 50 pints of water from my air every day. Just by running this machine in conjunction with my home HVAC system, I’m able to keep my allergy and sinus issues better under check.
Keeping my HVAC system clean after a sandstorm
When I planned to move to a desert state for a new job, I wasn’t expecting the degree of transitions I would face from day one. Growing up in the hot and humid southern United States was nowhere near sufficient to prepare me for the 110 degree afternoons that would greet me on random July and August afternoons with little to no cloud cover in sight. I changed my daily wardrobe choices and limited my time outdoors on days when I knew it would be particularly intense. Although I seem to eventually catch a break regarding the outdoor temperatures during many times of the year, what I can’t seem to ever escape regardless of the season is sandstorms. They come on with little warning if you aren’t following weather forecasts closely all hours of the day, and if they’re severe enough it becomes next to impossible to even drive a few miles down the road. The visibility often hits zero when a particularly strong one rolls through my city. Unfortunately, there was one afternoon that I left the house with several of my windows down and was caught in a sandstorm while shopping at the grocery store. Although I was able to take shelter in the store for an hour while waiting for it to pass, my house wasn’t as lucky. My air conditioner had been running while the windows were open and pulled in a lot of outside air and a considerable amount of sand. I found it on surfaces near the windows and all over the floor. But worst of all was finding it in my air return and eventually the air handler after my HVAC technician opened it to take a look. Thankfully he was able to clean out the sand before it damaged the evaporator coil and I was able to handle the rest of the sand around the house. I know now to always keep my house shut up whenever a sandstorm is passing through.
Learning AC filter care after owning a home for the first time
It took me several to get used to home maintenance. I spent the duration of my college years and into my early 30s living in apartments exclusively. I was conditioned into calling the maintenance staff to my unit anytime I had anything remotely close to an issue. I did this even if I merely lacked the right size ladder to change a light bulb on a high ceiling or had a minute drain clog. It’s easy to take this resource for granted, particularly when you know and expect nothing else. The first year of finally owning a house at last was not what I expected. I drove to the hardware store confused and annoyed more times than I would like to admit. Although I think I’m starting to understand basic handyman tasks and other home repairs, I am particularly embarrassed to say that I didn’t know what kind of air conditioner filter to buy when it came time to replace it the very first time. The maintenance staff at all of my apartments even handled the air conditioning systems, so I had literally never replaced one of those filters in my life. I had to get on the internet just to figure out where the faceplate for the filter tray is located before I could even try to find the filter to determine what size fits in the machine. Once I found the filter compartment, removed the filter, and then wrote down the measurements, I went to the hardware store to find a replacement. The only issue was that there were nearly 10 separate varieties all in that particular size and I had no clue where to start. A helpful employee pointed out a filter that has high enough allergen ratings to filter out mold and dust particles but thin enough to foster good airflow for better system efficiency. It’s a work in progress, but I think I’m finally making headway with learning all of my necessary home maintenance skills.
