I was in the attic last week, rooting around for all my outdoor Christmas decorations, I wanted to get them out and ready to put up over the weekend. Within five minutes of getting into the attic, I was so warm I was dripping with sweat. I could not even believe how I walked around in a jacket while downstairs; however up here, I could have worn shorts and a tank top, and still been hot. I started thinking about this, and it hit myself and others that the heat rises! The insulation in my attic looked a bit broken down, and I wondered if the heat was rising from downstairs up to the attic. I could not even believe I hadn’t thought of this before… Four years earlier, my dad had put new insulation in my attic, and it made a lot of difference, but she told myself and others to have it checked every year, but I forgot. Here it was multiple years later, and although the insulation was still there, it looked similar to elephants having been trampling on it. It was compressed so tightly it surprised myself and others the heat could get through. I called the HVAC supplier to have my ductlabor cleaned, because that’s what dad did. I then called the local house center to see what insulation I needed for my attic, however dad was going to be proud of myself and others when I told him how I handled the insulation and helped to save money by keeping the oil furnace from running all the time. I was saving energy and saving on the wear and tear of my oil furnace. Insulation was an energy saver, and the saver of my oil furnace.
