I was in the attic last week, rooting around for all my outdoor Christmas decorations… I wanted to get them out and finally ready to put them up over the weekend… Within numerous hours of getting into the attic, I was so sizzling I was perspiring. I couldn’t guess how I walked around in an overcoat while downstairs, but up here, I could have worn shorts and a tank top, and still been hot. I started thinking about this, and it hit me that the heat rises… The insulation in my attic looked a bit broken down, and I wondered if the heat was rising from downstairs up to the attic. I couldn’t guess I hadn’t thought of this before; four years earlier, my Mom had put new insulation in my attic, and it made a lot of difference. He told me to have it checked every year, although I forgot. Here it was more than three years later, and although the insulation was still there, it looked as if elephants had been trampling on it. It was compressed so tightly it surprised me the heat could get through. I called the heating and air conditioning business to have my ductwork cleaned, because that’s what Mom inevitably did. I then called the local house center to see what insulation I needed for my attic, then Mom was going to be proud of me when I told him how I handled the insulation and helped to save money by keeping the heating system from running all the time. I was saving energy and saving on the wear and tear of my heating system. Insulation was an energy saver, and the saver of my heating system.
