Our neighborhood hosts a large fundraiser each year to benefit the homeless shelter.
They have been able to raise enough money each year to purchase current cots, run a clothing closet, & even upgrade some of the appliances in the soup home office.
The fundraiser normally takes locale at the county park & is held at the beginning of May. They set up a sizable carnival type event that includes old fashioned games, a pet dressing contest, & barbeque cook off. It is entirely a nice cut from the winter’s dreary feel. For some reason this year it has never entirely seemed to warm up or dry out. The park is a large mud puddle & there is no way to hold the event there. The committee that organizes the event didn’t want to postpone because people planned for the event at that time each year. They had already made arrangements with several of the vendors & entertainers months before & knew that they would not be able to change those either. One of the members came up with a brilliant idea. They contacted the owners of a small shopping mall that was basically closed & made arrangements for the event to take locale indoors. It was entirely ideal as the locale was dry & heated so it would allow more people to come out & enjoy the event. The crowd that showed up was much larger than they have had in the past & they raised almost twice as much money for the mission. I think they may consider moving it indoors in the future too because it was such a superb success.
