I love my cellar

For some reason, my son loves watching scary movies.

For about two years, I couldn’t get him to go into my pantry.

He thought that it was a place where ghosts lived. I tried to tell him that there was just a lot of ventilation in there to keep the air moving and to keep it cool. He didn’t want to hear it. I had to drag him into the pantry, kicking and screaming, and shut the door. We stood there while I explained to him why it felt so much colder than the rest of the house. My husband is a HVAC technician and he turned my pantry into an indoor root cellar. He put insulation in the entire pantry and he added some really good air conditioning and a ventilation system. I wanted to be able to winter over my root vegetables. Instead of canning, or just letting them rot, I thought that if I had a root cellar, we could keep them fresh. The air conditioning keeps the temperature at around fifty degrees. The ventilation keeps the air moving so that there is always ventilation surrounding the vegetables that are in there. It took him a while to understand what I was saying and he still stayed until he was about twelve years old. At that point he told me that he wanted to be a HVAC tech just like his dad. I had to admit that I was really proud of him making that decision. Maybe someday I’ll have do some other HVAC work for me. His dad seems to forget what needs to be done at home.
