When I hired an HVAC professional to come service my HVAC system for it’s 6 month checkup, I wasn’t expecting the news I got. I’ve never had any issues with my HVAC system before, so it was all a shock. The HVAC professional told me that there was an air leak in my ductwork, which had gone unnoticed. I asked him how I could’ve found the air leak, but he told me there was no way for me to see it on my own. Thankfully, I’d hired him for a service appointment, because if not, things could’ve been a lot worse. He told me that a lot of homes who don’t have their HVAC system serviced never see things like this, until their utility bill skyrockets and things are too far gone. Since I would never be able to see an air duct leak, I wanted to know the warning signs and he gave me a list of things to be looking for. The first sign was a higher utility bill and excess humidity. The second warning sign was funky air odors and dust lingering on the window sills. I was a little surprised that these were the warning signs he gave me, because they were so generic. These signs could also mean 100 other things in the heat and air world. I questioned the HVAC professional about it and he gave me some really good advice. He said that if there were any issues like this, an HVAC professional needed to be called either way. It didn’t matter if it was something small or something large like an air duct leak.
