Sometimes, my brother Joe acts like he doesn’t have any sense at all.

Sometimes I worry about him and whether or not he will ever get anywhere in life.

I know that he has to be somewhat smart, since he is my brother after all, but I don’t know where most of his genes came from. The other day, I went over to his house to visit him and have some lunch and I found that he was using the little electric space heater in his kitchen to melt the cheese on some grilled cheese sandwiches. This was literally the first time I’ve ever seen anyone use an electric space heater to melt cheese before, and I told him so. He told me that he used to use his electric space heater to melt all kinds of things back when he was in college. This was all news to me, and I thought that it was the craziest thing that I had ever heard of. I told Joe that an electric space heater is not a toy, nor is it a griddle of some sort to make food on! He just laughed at me and told me that I am too uptight. That’s what he always says wheneverI think that he’s doing something really dumb. I don’t know, but I think that this whole thing with the electric space heater is probably the weirdest thing that I’ve ever seen him do. I hope that he listens to me and doesn’t keep using the space heater for things that it’s not meant for because that could really end up being a fire hazard for him.

If you feel drafts or cold spots in your house, arm yourself with a caulk gun and fill in those holes to get rid of those cold drafts. A lot of people think that they have to have the ductwork in their houses cleaned on a regular basis, but it’s really not true.

You really don’t need to have your ductwork cleaned all that often.

That’s because the ductwork system in your home is a closed circuit. There’s really not any way for lots of stuff to get in there unless it’s something that’s already inside of your house. For example, if you do a sheetrock repair job inside of your home, then there will be drywall dust everywhere and that might get sucked into your ventilation system. Other than that kind of thing, though, you don’t really have to worry all that much About what’s inside of your ventilation system. I think that a lot of people have the wrong idea when it comes to getting their ductwork professionally cleaned. It’s not really something that you have to do very often at all. As a matter of fact, if you climbed up into the ceiling and looked inside of your ventilation ducts right now, you would probably see that the sheet metal is relatively pristine inside. It just doesn’t have the opportunity to get dirty all that often. That’s a good thing, too, because it would be bad if your ventilation system was constantly getting filled with dust, dirt, and grime. That wouldn’t be good for any of us because then the ventilation system would constantly be recirculating that into the air that we breathe. No, we don’t need to clean the ductwork that often, and that’s really a good thing!

Back in the day, our older brother had a really nice car.

The thing is, there was no working air conditioner.

We didn’t even have a working air conditioner in our house though, not even a window AC unit. I guess you could say, we got used to the extreme heat. When we wanted to cool off, we would go to the local swimming pool and our brother would take us in his sweet ride! The engine in that car was a monster and he would often peel out and we would take off in a rush! I always enjoyed feeling the relaxing breeze when we were driving so fast! The windows being rolled down was something like a makeshift cooling system in my mind. Anyway, it was so much better than relaxing at home with nothing but a fan to try to keep cool. Also, it was fun getting into water fights around the neighborhood. And of course, if we were desperate on a miserably overheated day, we would sometimes go to a rich friend’s home and enjoy their cooling system. Our parents didn’t like us to get spoiled too much by air conditioning though basically because we were unable to afford it. Still, I’ll never forget rolling around in our brother’s car with those windows rolled down. Nobody even cared that there was no cooling system, the car was just impressive and my brother got a lot of attention from the ladies with that car. I don’t think they even minded the lack of air conditioning when he would take different girls out on dates.

Things were especially hard for my mother when my father passed away. Suddenly she had to worry about things like getting regular HVAC system maintenance and changing the air filters. She had to keep the house clean with good air quality, and she had to cover all the bills. Fortunately, Dad had an excellent life insurance plan, so my mother is able to live comfortably without having to work all the time. She works part time at a flower shop where they have surprisingly good temperature control settings, but I know that’s to help keep the flowers as fresh and preserved as possible. Anyway, I have been stepping up to help my mother out all the time these days. She kept complaining about poor air quality, even though she was changing the air filters all the time. The air filters were good enough quality, so it was confusing at first. Then I came to find that the ductwork system was entirely filthy. I told my mother she could use a good ductwork cleaning. When I learned how costly her energy bills were, I thought the ductwork might also need to be resealed. I had an HVAC expert come out and he found that there were holes in the ductwork and sections would need to be replaced. But there was a better option. Since the HVAC was old and could use a replacement, the expert presented the option of having a ductless mini split installed. It was a reasonable cost, so we went for it and now my mother has awesome air quality and perfect comfort.

I never would have thought that a game I decided to purchase for my kid awhile back would turn out to become my favorite game. It’s basically this game that has battle royale on an island that is regularly changing and you are able to collect materials and build while fighting. Back then I played this game online with my son and he was way better than I was. It was sort of frustrating for me at first because I would always die without getting kills. I would usually crank the AC in my room when playing this game because I felt like I was always overheated. I guess that was the stress building. Well, I kept at the game until things started to click. Also, I enjoyed the additional air conditioning I was getting in the room all the time. The temperature control settings in my room actually felt better than what my son had access to in the living room. He said maybe we should get a window A/C unit for the living room area as well. Well, I thought we could do better and I consulted with an HVAC expert. The guy advised us to try going for a zoned HVAC that was ductless. He said how these ductless systems are extremely energy efficient and I wouldn’t have to worry about ductwork cleaning, sealing, and other expensive jobs. So I had the zoned HVAC installed and now there is customized comfort in all the different rooms. These days, I’m actually better at the game than my son. I think that maybe upsets him and so he focuses on other games these days that he’s really good at with his own customized temperature control settings in his room.

Back in the past when I was living with my folks, I didn’t really understand anything about the HVAC system.

When my folks assigned me the chore to change the air filters every single month, I thought it was a giant waste of money.

I would even have to go to the store to pick up the air filters and they would give me the money to do that. Well, one time, I decided to go for some cheaper air filters that were on sale, so I could use the rest of the money to buy a new video game. I used the cheaper air filters for a little while and it was nice having a little spending money. Well, I was in hot water when the HVAC equipment broke down. The HVAC pro who came out said the problem was the cheap air filters we were using. When my father learned I was getting cheap air filters, he set me up for punishment. Because I didn’t listen, I caused the destruction to the HVAC since those cheap air filters don’t protect the HVAC unit. All the dust and debris gets in there and in this case, our HVAC system overheated. Fortunately, it was able to be repaired, but I had to cover the cost for that repair which took a lot of extra chores around the house! I definitely learned my lesson, so use cheap air filters, it’s not worth the expense of an inevitable HVAC system breakdown! Even to this day, I always use quality air filters and have the ductwork cleaned regularly in my home.

I didn’t really know what was going on, but the last time the HVAC pro came out, he tried really hard to get us to upgrade our HVAC components. He kept saying how the air quality was kind of lacking in our home. While I could sort of agree with that, I figured it was nothing a little more vacuuming wouldn’t fix. I even said that to him and he laughed and said this was going to take a lot more than a little bit of vacuuming. I was totally in disagreement with the guy. He talked about how we should invest in HEPA filters, which are extremely overpriced. He said those pull 99.9% of contaminants from the air. While that’s nice and all, I like to be able to put food on the table for my family, so the HEPA filters were out of the question. Then he started talking about upgrading our HVAC with a good UV air purification system. The one he was trying to sell us also used HEPA filters, and I just couldn’t deal with this guy. I told him to please just do the work on the HVAC and be on his way, because I had places to be. He seemed a little upset and disappointed, but at least he listened. I hope the next HVAC expert who comes out isn’t trying to sell me on a ton of things like that guy was trying to do. I suspect the owner of the HVAC company is pushing the professionals to try to get more sales with the people, but I’m not going for any of that unless I need something.

After getting a couple of estimates for different types of HVAC installations, we thought that the ductless mini split system would probably be our best bet.

That style of heating system install was shockingly expensive, but I saw most of the cost was pulling up the floors in order to install the piping for this type of system. I figure if you want to go for an installation like that, you are better off doing it when the home is being built. This home that we have though is old, from the 50s actually. There was no way I was going for a fancy installation, but the ductless HVAC system seemed like a breath of fresh air. I loved the idea of having multiple zones with customized temperature control settings throughout. So I made arrangements with the HVAC company to have the ductless mini split installed. We got a whopping 7 zones in our home, covering all the main areas and all the bedrooms. The HVAC experts were telling us how they were placing the indoor units strategically for ultimate comfort and energy efficiency. Well, so far this new zoned HVAC has been a dream. The energy savings are overwhelming. We used to use the gas furnace for heating, but now we only use the ductless and we are saving hundreds each month for our heating bills! We still have the gas furnace in our home, but I figure we’d only turn it on in the case of an emergency.

I was really happy when I started working as an HVAC professional, but my ultimate dream was to start my own business.

The plan for me was basically to learn how the HVAC business functions and know the ins and outs when it comes to heating and AC repair work and installations.

I absolutely thrived at the HVAC company I was working at, but I didn’t agree with the high prices for our services. The boss would joke with me saying how he could always lower my pay rate to give people discounts. I know he was only joking, but that didn’t sit well with me. With inflation to deal with, I couldn’t take a pay cut at all. Still, I decided to start my own business which was very small at first. Some of my buddies came to work for me and suggested we build a good website for our business. We did, but business was terribly slow for such a long time. I was coming close to giving up until I worked with an SEO marketing company that guaranteed they would boost traffic to our website and make it more functional. Suddenly, we were able to chat with curious potential customers online, schedule appointments, and traffic was boosted heavily. We got so much business that we had to hire way more HVAC experts, we even settled for young professionals right out of HVAC college who were fast learners. I have to say, I never expected my business to explode like that, but now we’re doing so well that I’m thinking about opening some other HVAC shops across the state.
