My dad was a university president at the same university where he managed to acquire his degree.

After so many years in academia, he was asked to bring the aged university into the new age. That essentially would mean infrastructure improvements, modernization via technology, plus even examination of the long-standing industrial boilers used to supply overheated water to the dorms, sterilization to the science labs, plus sanitization methods to the laundry centers plus university cafeteria. It wasn’t long after becoming president that his head of buildings plus grounds came to him to explain that the industrial boilers were in need of common maintenance. This past winter, my husband and I experienced a scary moment when one of our children was diagnosed with asthma.

• We were thrown into a world of inhalers and it definitely altered some aspects of our everyday life.

Through some testing, we learned what the allergens were and worked to remove them from our daily life. This actually was helpful for my husband as well, who also has horrible seasonal allergies and asthma. Unfortunately, we were still having some battles with allergens, and it seemed like the things we were doing were not as helpful as we had hoped. It was at this point that I started doing research on how to improve air flow and limit allergens in our home. After installing the allergy reducing air filter, I did see some improvement in both my husband and child’s symptoms. It was at this point that I contacted a local, reputable HVAC company. The HVAC company thoroughly inspected our unit and ductwork to ensure the unit was functioning and that the ductwork was clean. After I expressed my concern about allergens, the HVAC company stated that they could install a whole home air purifier. I did not hesitate to move forward with this installation. With as many allergen concerns as our family was having, I knew it was worth the investment. Since the installation, I can see a difference in the symptoms of both my husband and child. While I know I cannot protect my family from every possible allergen, I am glad I can at least make the air in our home as allergen-free as possible.

Living in the midwest, there are a few different ways that we maintain our home through the seasons.

The season that we put the most emphasis on is that of winter.

We live in an area that receives a lot of snowfall, so we do our best to be prepared for anything that comes our way each year. Most of this winter preparation occurs in the fall. One of the most important things we do is have our HVAC inspected yearly in the fall. We started this tradition after one of our great friends had their HVAC unit suddenly fail in the middle of a terrible cold season. I felt so bad for them, and I knew that I never wanted to be dealing with that in winter. The company that repaired their unit instructed them that the particular problem they had could have been identified on inspection, and if they had completed their yearly inspection, this problem could have been avoided entirely. This situation made our HVAC inspection a yearly part of our home maintenance. Since our winters are worse than other areas of the country, we always complete this maintenance in the middle of fall. We always use a trustworthy HVAC company. For several years now they have thoroughly inspected our unit. The HVAC company also always gives our family instruction for how to better maximize our heating and how to improve the life of our HVAC unit. There have been some years they have made repairs, but even if our machine is working great, I am always glad to have peace of mind going into the winter season that our family will be warm and comfortable.

My husband and I both work full-time, demanding jobs.

We also have a giant house, three kids and two dogs to take care of.

Our kids are all involved in sports, and on most nights, we either have practices or games to attend. We typically leave the house by 7:30 every morning and don’t return until around 8 PM. Because of our hectic lifestyle, it’s difficult to keep up with everyday challenges. We struggle to find time to get the laundry done, buy groceries, vacuum, mow the lawn and get the oil changed in the car. There is definitely no extra time to deal with sudden problems. We need to keep all of our essential home systems and equipment running reliably. One of the best decisions I’ve made was to invest in a smart thermostat. For the first seven days after installation, the smart thermostat tracked every adjustment we made to temperature. It then learned our schedule and built a program to accommodate it. The thermostat automatically adjusts temperature settings to conserve energy when we’re sleeping or out of the house and welcomes us back to perfect comfort. It sends me emailed alerts when it’s time to change air filters or schedule professional maintenance. If there’s a problem with the furnace or air conditioner, the thermostat notifies me as well as our chosen HVAC professional. Most often, remote diagnosis solves the problem. Plus, we have access to information and controls from virtually anywhere. The app is wonderfully user friendly and allows me to make changes in a matter of seconds.

The company I work for recently built a brand new building in the downtown area.

I was extremely anxious to move into our updated facility.

I was excited to have a brand new office, desk and chair with a gorgeous view of the city. I was told that the corporation was sparing no expense and installing the latest heating, cooling and lighting technology. However, I quickly realized that there are some drawbacks to our modern facility. Because of the very prestigious location, there is no nearby parking. I’m now forced to leave my car in a parking garage several blocks away. I then walk through temperatures that fluctuate between ninety and negative twenty degrees. I navigate crowded sidewalks and deal with snow, rain, humidity and every possible weather condition. I am very thankful that the building is entire temperature controlled. I am not thrilled that there is no access to a thermostat anywhere in the building. The temperature of the building is regulated automatically and according to the calendar. At a designated date, the heating system starts up and it operates for six straight months. The day the heating system shuts down, the air conditioner take over. It doesn’t matter what the weather outside is doing. If we get a particularly hot and humid October, the heating system is still pumping hot air into the building. Since none of the windows open, we have no way to escape the heat. Most everyone keeps a small fan on their desk as well as a jacket draped over the back of their chair. When the air conditioner is blasting, the building is often freezing cold.

Because of the very short summer season in my area, there’s no need to invest in a central cooling system.

I’m able to handle the demands of the house with open windows, box fans and portable cooling units in the bedrooms.

Until recently, our air conditioners were extremely old. Although the units fit into the windows, they were quite bulky and heavy. I always dreaded carrying them down from the attic. The attic stairs are narrow and very steep, and I struggled to haul the air conditioners down in the spring and back up in the late fall. The hardest part was lifting the equipment up into the window. About two years ago, when I was struggling to shove an air conditioner into the window, I pushed way too hard. The frame of the window was old and slightly rotted. It gave way and the air conditioner fell through and crashed to the ground below. I was fortunate that the cooling unit didn’t land on my car. However, it did smash into a million pieces. When I checked out the options for air conditioners at the local home improvement store, I was surprised by the improvements in design over the last few years. These newer models are much more compact and lightweight, and yet provide more powerful cooling. These updated versions are also far more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. The operational sounds are much quieter, and these units offer helpful features such as humidity control, fan speed adjustment and remote access. I can link the air conditioner to an app on my smartphone. This enables me to start it up, shut it down or make changes to operation, even when I’m not in the bedroom. The new air conditioner was also reasonably priced. I was so impressed with it that I replaced all of our outdated air conditioners with new models.

I’ve maintained a gym membership for nearly ten years.

I am committed to taking good care of myself.

I am a vegetarian, and I don’t smoke, drink alcohol or take any prescription medication. I make sure to get eight hours of sleep, consume lots of water and visit the gym five times per week. Every weekday, I arrive at the gym by six o’clock in the morning and workout for an hour before work. I take advantage of the treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, free weights, kettlebells and all the various machines and equipment. I get my heart pumping and work up a good sweat. I usually leave the gym feeling energized, and I then enjoy a much more productive day. Last summer, I noticed that by the end of every training session, I was suffering a severe headache. While working out, I’d often sneeze, cough and complain of a sore throat. My symptoms typically went away once I stepped outside. I eventually got suspicious that there was a problem with the indoor air quality at the gym. I’d started having these health issues right after the facility started running the air conditioner. I mentioned it to the guy working the front desk, and he promised to look into it. Apparently, I wasn’t the only gym member to complain. The gym management finally hired a professional HVAC contractor to service the air conditioner. The technician found that the inner workings of the cooling system were overrun with mold, dust, algae and all sorts of contaminants. Every time the air conditioner ran, it was spreading these allergens into the breathing air.

And I don’t mean this century

I entirely wanted to get a modern central air conditioner idea this year, although I wanted to wait until I could get a entirely great deal on it. The people I was with and I have been wanting to completely replace our central air conditioner idea ever since we moved into our beach apartment a couple of years ago. The whole apartment is in wonderful shape, except for the Heating and Air Conditioning system. I guess the former owners spent all of their cash on remodeling the kitchen and the lavatorys. They also put on a completely modern roof and did rewiring all over the house. The Heating and Air Conditioning system, however, entirely leaves a lot to be desired. There was an seasoned old electric furnace in the basement and it cost us a advantage to run it during the winters that we’ve been here. The gas fireplace was a joke, and I was scared to even turn it on at first. I could just imagine the fireplace igniting and blowing up our entire house! As far as the central air conditioner went, I am pretty sure that the unit in the apartment had been installed back around the turn of the century. And I don’t mean this century. I mean the last one! Anyway, we’ve been waiting to get a great deal on a modern central air conditioning system idea and we decided that this year was going to be the year. I’ve had my eye on a couple of odd brands that are available at our local Heating and Air Conditioning business, and Last yearthey started their annual pre-summer time sale. If we order our modern central air conditioning system unit in the next couple of mornings, then we will get free air conditioning system repair and service for the next several years!

It’s been so chilly here this Springtime that I was beginning to think that summer time wasn’t ever going to start.

The two of us had a long Wintertide this year, and my heating bills were higher than I can ever remember them being before; Not only that, but the two of us also used our gas fireplace this year more than the two of us really ever have in the past.

I kept waiting for the temperatures outside to beginning heating up, but it’s been so chilly and rainy that it felt prefer the two of us had moved to a chilly northern climate or something, finally, just a couple of days ago, the chilly weather broke and the two of us started to see some sun for the first time in a long while. It wasn’t until the temperature outside absolutely started to heat up a little that I realized that the two of us hadn’t had our yearly air conditioning maintenance done yet. Usually I call our Heating and Air Conditioning contractor around the middle of April and have them come and check the air conditioner out for us. I prefer to get everything in enjoyable laboring order along with up-to-date air filters before I ever even turn the temperature control over to air conditioning. This year, since the weather was so chilly out for so long, the thoughts of air conditioning never even crossed my mind until it started heating up. I guess I will try to make an appointment with our local Heating and Air Conditioning contractor pretty soon. Hopefully everyone else didn’t forget too, or I’ll be waiting around for a long time before I’m able to get an appointment with them.
