Duct cleaning solves concerns with air quality

We owned our house for twelve years before it ever occurred to me to have the duct system professionally serviced.

I finally started taking better care of the ducts when I noticed some problems with indoor air quality. Despite being conscientious about air filter changes and maintenance for the furnace and air conditioner, there was dust and unpleasant smells coming from the heating/cooling vents. I was constantly forced to dust, vacuum and scrub the house, and yet it still felt dirty. Every time the air conditioner started up this past summer, my kids complained of the odor. I also realized that the whole family was frequently sneezing. Concerned about a health threat, I called an HVAC contractor and explained the issues we were having. After a thorough inspection of the entire heating and cooling system, he recommended duct cleaning. Testing of the duct system revealed a significant blockage concealed inside the pipes. There was dust, dander, pollen, webs, mold growth and several dead rodents restricting airflow. Since the conditioned air passes through the ducts multiple times per day, a great deal of particulate and harmful bacteria was getting spread into our breathing air. Plus, this buildup was forcing the furnace and air conditioner to work harder to achieve comfort levels. The duct cleaning process took a couple of hours and caused no mess or damage. This service significantly improved the comfort, cleanliness and health of the living environment. It also reduced the cost of my heating and cooling bills by about fifteen percent. From now on, I’ll make sure to have the ductwork professionally tested and serviced every couple of years.

Humidifier improves winter comfort

In the area where I live, the weather is cold enough to require heating for the majority of the year.

During those chilly months of snow and sub zero temperatures, the outdoor air is naturally very dry.

Inside the house, with the furnace running, the lack of humidity causes all sorts of problems. The dry air pulls moisture out of the hardwood floors, moldings, doors, picture frames, musical instruments and antiques and can cause them to crack. It results in static shock that can potentially damage low voltage electronics. Insufficient humidity dries out nasal passages and makes people more susceptible to respiratory infection. It irritates symptoms of asthma, allergies, psoriasis and eczema and can often be blamed for sore throat, itchy eyes, headaches and bloody noses. Plus, dry air feels colder than properly moisturized air. Low humidity levels encourage higher thermostat settings, increasing strain on the furnace. I end up paying higher energy bills for less comfort. The simple solution is a whole-home humidifier. There are fan-style, bypass and steam-style humidifiers to choose from, each offering different benefits and drawbacks. I chose a steam-style humidifier because it operates independently from the furnace. The heating system doesn’t need to be running in order for the humidifier to introduce moisture into the air. It uses electrodes to turn water into steam, creating a very natural style of humidity. With the humidifier running, the house is far more comfortable. It feels warmer, and my family has less complaints over dry skin. The savings on heating costs has recovered the investment into the purchase and installation of the humidifier. It doesn’t cost much to run and requires only yearly service.

Waiting to buy central air conditioner:

We start it up shortly after the snow melts and keep it operating until the weather gets super chilly in the fall

For a long time, I held off installing central air conditioning into my home. I live in the northeastern part of the country, very close to the border, and our winter weather is brutal. We depend on the furnace for approximately eight months per year. It’s not unusual for the temperature to remain well below freezing and even down into the negative digits. I spend a fortune on my annual heating bills. I look forward to the weather warming up and finally getting some fresh air into the house. I never had any interest in closing the house up and running a central cooling system. My family managed with electric fans and a couple of window air conditioners. It wasn’t until I needed to replace the furnace that I decided to make the investment. The HVAC contractor offered a deal on the air conditioner, and because it was 90 degrees at the time, I went ahead with it. My whole family is totally happy with the central cooling system. It’s so convenient to be able to adjust a thermostat and have the whole house maintained at the ideal temperature. It helps with humidity and the cleanliness of the living space to have the air continuously circulated and filtered. Keeping the windows closed helps to keep out bugs, exhaust fumes, pollen and noise pollution. I’m surprised by how often we operate the air conditioner. We start it up shortly after the snow melts and keep it operating until the weather gets super chilly in the fall. Because I spent a little extra on a higher efficiency air conditioner, the cost of keeping the house cool and comfortable is reasonable.

Looking into replacing my gas furnace

My house will be more comfortable and energy efficient

My furnace is well over twenty years old. Although it’s still operational, I think it’s time to replace it. Over the last five years, I’ve noticed a steady decline in performance. Even when the heating system was brand new, it only achieved an 80% AFUE rating. My heating bills have continued to grow more expensive every month. This proves that the efficiency is decreasing, creating a bigger impact on the environment and my budget. There are now furnaces on the current market that promise a 98% AFUE rating. Despite the cost of purchase and installation, I am convinced I’d save enough money on my heating bills to recover the investment. I’m also a bit worried about health threats due to contaminated indoor air quality. There’s definitely more dust blowing out of the vents and circulating around the house. I need to vacuum, dust and clean a lot more often. While the furnace has proven quite reliable, it’s most likely that it will fail when it’s working the hardest. Odds are that it will malfunction in the middle of the winter, when the temperature is well below freezing. I don’t want to be left without heat during a blizzard. I’d much rather schedule the installation over the summer, when it won’t disrupt everyday life. This would give me time to research different makes and models and make smart choices. Although I’m dreading the project, I know that it’s necessary and will be beneficial in the end. My house will be more comfortable and energy efficient. I’ll also benefit from the furnace being covered by a manufacturer’s warranty.

School isn’t for everyone

A few years ago when I graduated high university.

I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew that I had to get some sort of college degree, but I wasn’t positive as to how I wanted to spend the rest of our life! That’s when the folks around me highly encouraged me to get a general company degree so that I could figure out our exact direction later down the road. I took their advice to heart and then I began attending community college to get our basic company degree. It wasn’t all that long, but, before I dropped out plus started in an unusual direction. In the heating plus cooling industry. You see, as I was taking our classes I was consistently hearing the professor talk next door. It seems to be some kind of mechanical repair service plus technology course, plus all of the students who were enrolled looked somewhat happy when it came to what they were learning. One afternoon, I snuck into the class plus realized that it was a certified Heating plus A/C worker course. This class was a section of the licensed heating, cooling, plus ventilation program which was renowned at our community college. I decided to audit a single of the courses plus within 5 minutes of learning about advanced cooling systems plus air quality control management, I knew that I was in the wrong field. I quickly dropped out of our company curriculum plus applied to the heating and cooling program given at our college. Today, I’m confident that I made the correct choice by entering the Heating plus A/C worker field; Rather than worrying about the heartless intricacies of business, I worry about the intricacies of air quality control management. I get to help our neighbors with their residential Heating plus A/C needs every single afternoon, and now I know that’s our business.

Air quality at the gym is a problem for my health

As part of my regular daily routine, I wake up in the morning and head straight for the gym.

  • I devote an hour to working out, using a selection of different exercise equipment.

I then shower and get prepared for work. After my day at the office, I return back home to relax for a little while and then go to bed. My workouts early in the morning are a great way to make me more productive. I’m always in a better mood, and I feel better about myself. The workouts result in a higher level of energy. I get some physical exertion before sitting sedentary at a desk for the remainder of the day. My strenuous workout program keeps me in good physical shape. I stay healthy. Unfortunately, in the beginning of June, I began having some health issues. I dealt with congestion, sore throat, headache and itchy eyes. I was constantly sneezing, coughing and was exhausted all day. Assuming I had caught some type of flu, I tried taking vitamins, drinking fruit juice and heading to bed earlier. Nothing made a difference. After a couple of weeks, my symptoms became worse. I finally went to see a doctor and was given a prescription. I’d begin to feel better over the weekends and feel really sick again during the week. I finally realized that I was sneezing and coughing every time I was at the gym. My symptoms had shown up right around the time the weather turned warmer. I became suspicious of the air quality at the gym and thought it might be the dirty air conditioner. I brought up my problems to the manager of the gym. She arranged for professional cleaning and service for the cooling systems. I immediately felt better and no longer suffered from any symptoms.
